With the government shutdown of drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, oil prices have steadily risen, causing more and more people to look into alternative fuels and methods of obtaining energy. One of these focuses on the oldest source of heat and light: the sun.

Solar energy has long been a dream of man like finding the best direct tv deals, and has been experimented with to some degree or another for hundreds of years. With the awakening of environmental consciousness in the 1970s, aided by the OPEC embargo and a fuel shortage, solar power finally got its chance to shine and entered the world as a viable energy source.

Solar power is gathered by photovoltaic cells, like those seen in this picture. The cells individually gather energy and convert it through a process to alternating current which can be used to power any number of electronics. The sun gives off massive amounts of energy on every square meter of earth, which means that if we can figure out the right way of doing it, humanity could have limitless erengy fed from the sun.

Today, solar panels can be seen on traffic lights, personal homes, Air Force bases, and lots of other places. Generally speaking, solar energy is not yet worth the hassle. Consumers pay about $1.80 per kilowatt/hour, although Nellis Air Force Base manages it for a fraction of that cost. However, with more and more attention being directed towards research and useage of solar energy, the future hopefully holds an economically sensible way of replacing much of the world’s oil consumption with energy from the sun.

Alternative Power Sources

The fossil fuels that are used as the main source of power in many of the industries are causing massive problems in the world. They are leading to damage to the environment and this can cause the end of the world too. The fossil fuels are also not renewable sources of energy. They may run out one day and this can cause the world to come to a standstill. This has caused the people from various countries to try and research the various other methods of fueling the machinery.

The common alternative power sources are discussed here. The main source of power is that wind. The wind can be harnessed by various windmills. The wind mills convert the energy that is generated from the force of the wind into electrical energy. The electrical energy can then be converted into mechanical energy, heat energy or any other energy. This is because of the fact that the energy that is produced cannot be lost and can only be converted into another form of energy.

Other than the wind energy, the power of water is also great. The water that flows in the rivers are harnessed in the various hydro electric projects. This energy is then converted into electrical energy by the turbines that are used in the hydro electric projects. The advantage of the hydro electric project is that there will be no side effects, but the water that is flowing needs to be stopped with a dam, so that the power that is produced can be regulated.

The most important alternative power source is the solar power. The rays of the sun are very powerful and they can be harnessed to be converted into electrical energy and also heat energy. There are many houses that are using the solar power for their regular consumption, I know one who is an online trading broker, using solar power as his primary source of energy. The initial setting up cost is high, but is cheaper than electricity.

Reducing Energy Prices

Although our location and available resources are responsible for dictating how much we ultimately spend on energy, there are ways to lower energy prices overall. Fossil fuels have been considered the typical means for obtaining electricity but it may be advantageous to use the Earth’s own natural resources, including the sun, water and wind. It may seem like an arduous process to arrange for solar power or wind turbine installation, but hydroelectric energy utilizes a dam for water power production and is thought to be relatively simple for professionals to establish (if it isn’t already in existence).

While many of us might not be financially ready to make environmental adjustments just yet, energy prices can be reduced merely by turning down the thermostat a few degrees. During the winter months, if you enjoy the nightlife and frequently visit the latest gourmet restaurants, remember to adjust the temperature slightly when not at home. Whenever your teeth chatter with the slightest chilly breeze, resort to utilizing space heaters or throw blankets. Consider it an opportunity to use the new fireplace that’s been on hiatus. Before you use it, it might be a good idea to have a professional check the chimney’s condition and flue for foreign matter.

Some of us are unable to rid ourselves of the voice that sounds much like our parents within our subconscious minds. Perhaps hearing “turn the light off” is reasonable advice, since our energy bills are often measured by the watt usage per hour. Follow the pattern of our ancestors by utilizing daylight to accomplish more tasks. In the evening, if we desire more light, try using the candles that have been in storage and turn off the lights in rooms that aren’t in use.

Finally, try reducing energy prices by decreasing general water usage. For example, turn off the tap when tooth-brushing. Fix that leaky faucet promptly. By doing this, we can potentially save gallons of water annually.
